When Bad UX is Good For Business

Users can easily qualify good and bad experiences when using digital products, and inevitably choose to avoid services that fail to meet expectations. So when would “bad UX” ever be a good thing for businesses?

Hello World Isla

I’m very proud to announce the safe arrival of my beautiful daughter, Isla. Born today 26/12/2015.

Stamford creative hub?

A new Stamford creative hub

After a fun 18 months at the Gooches Court office and a short stint working from home, I’ve found a new office in Stamford that I’ll be moving into very soon. My studio mates include an illustrator/printmaker, an app developer, an embroidery artist, and a social media consultant… so I’m looking forward to working and collaborating in this new creative […]

Websocket test

Websockets – Testing real time communication with socket.io

A simple test demonstrating real time communication between two clients using Websockets. The mobile device sends data about its orientation to the socket.io server, which is relayed in real time to other connected clients. This data is visualised by a cube rotating in 3D space. Source code available on GitHub. Video below.

Who's playing next in the World Cup?

Today’s World Cup matches

Who’s playing today in the World Cup? And when/where can I watch the matches on TV? Sometimes you just want to get right to the information that matters, so I made this web page that shows what teams are playing today, the kick-off time, and what broadcaster will be televising the match. worldcup2014.benstevens.uk Typefaces: Juniper Std and Sneakers Pro. Polytope

Polytope

I’m working on an interactive 3D interface – ‘Polytope’ – that reacts in a life-like / organic manner to human input, which may include touch, voice, or sound. This first version pulses rhythmically depending on the rotational speed set by the user. http://codepen.io/BenStevens/full/ivIhH

Reviewing iPad app ideas with graphic design students

NCS graphics students on RSA brief

You may have seen my post on the Supernova Design blog about the recent visit to the studio by graphic design students at New Stamford College where I’ve been helping out a bit this year. Well I thought I should write a follow-up on the project and the students’ responses to the brief. The RSA Everyday Wellbeing brief aims […]

IO music app

IO music app

IO is an on-going experimental music app that explores the visualisation of sounds and how they react to interaction. Some of the key questions behind the project: If sound could have a form or shape, what would it look like? Can colour help to describe sound? How could a user manipulate sound through touch interaction, and how […]

Graphic Information Design degree show 2013

I visited the Graphic Information Design degree show @ Ambika P3, University of Westminster last night. There was some interesting work from the students, the pieces that stood out for me were the Photosynthesis interactive table by Moritz von Burkersroda and the ‘Hive’ project featuring a combination of print and digital elements.

Moving in to the Stamford studio

New design studio in Stamford

After thirteen years in London I’ve moved back to the homelands of Lincolnshire to set up base. The new studio is on the top floor of a very old stone building facing the town meadows. I’ll post more photos to this Flickr album when I get a chance – Photos of the Stamford studio on […]

Interactive 3D gallery in THREE.js

Interactive 3D gallery

Working with designer Darren Walters I’m creating a interactive 3D gallery for an art gallery in Barcelona (the artwork seen in the screenshot above is that of the Catalan artist Joan Miro, sadly not on display at the gallery!) To create this interactive space I’m using the brilliant THREE.js javascript library that makes 3D for the […]

Just Isn’t Music / Ninja Tune

The Just Isn’t Music (JIM) website was conceived back in early 2010 in a Shoreditch cafe. The idea was to create a website that would build on existing visual assets into something totally new that would remain fresh over the months and (hopefully) years …. oh, and the entire website had to be displayed on […]

Hello World Alexander

Today the Stevens household expanded by one member. Welcome to the world, Alexander.

Goodbye Bow Studio

A parting snapshot of the old studio in Bow.

Celestial

‘Celestial’ is an on-going project exploring interaction with sound within physical spaces. The demo – created in Flash – is a non-interactive version that plots an arbitrary number of points at a random distance from the centre. The distance of each point determines the pitch of each audible tone. The StandingWave2 library is used in […]

Supernova is born

SUPERNOVA creates interactive experiences that facilitate the discovery, manipulation, and sharing of information in physical and digital environments. Read more – Supernova Design

Design in unexpected places

I was fortunate enough to stay in the Maldives in the Indian Ocean over Christmas, a truly unforgettable experience I’m glad I had the chance to do before the islands are inevitably lost to the waves some time this century (a fate shared by similar low-lying islands in the Pacific).

AlphaBetas

What is AlphaBetas? AlphaBetas is a new modular typeface designed by Ben Stevens. Each letter in the AlphaBetas alphabet can be constructed from a toolkit of 20 unique shapes in various arrangements. This 3-D browser is simply a playful and interactive way of showing how the AlphaBetas alphabet is assembled.

VectaNecta – VN01 Oscillate

The image of the analogue clock is synonymous with the circle. The circle represents repetition, completeness, harmony, and the ‘infinite’. We all experience elements of repetition in our lives but our general perception of time is more linear than circular; we are born, we live, we expire. We live our lives within cycles of varying […]

Being Green

Last night I watched a lecture on BBC1 by HRH Prince of Wales where he talked about humanity’s environmental impact and the immediate need to adopt more eco-friendly practices particularly in business. Nothing new, but it got me thinking. Even though my consumption of raw materials and waste is negligible as a digital designer, there […]

BenStevens.co.uk update June 2009

I’ve just given my site a long overdue makeover. The last major update was about a year ago, and it was starting to look a bit tired and messy. This new look is dead simple, clean, and colourful… and it only took 3 days to bash out. I had spent a couple of weeks on […]

New studio

Moved into my new studio on Bow Road today. Here’s a few snapshots. More shots here

Freelancing update

It's approaching two months since I made the decision to become a freelance interactive designer, and so far, touch-wood, there's been very little to regret. Here's what I've been up to over the last couple of months

New job, new site

There comes a point in every designer's career when they need to spread their wings and leave the comfort of a safe but uninspiring salaried job in which menial tasks are drip-fed to you on a daily basis.

ColourClock Screensaver

This is an animated clock screensaver I created for Liquid Digital using Flash, inspired by PixelBreaker’s Polar Clock. You can download the screensaver from their blog.

How not to underachieve in 2008

One of the lesser-known curses of being “creative” is that you tend to get creative ideas almost constantly, at any point of day or night, and usually when you’ve got an existing project already on the boil. In the past, most of the ideas I’ve had for potentially interesting projects would have been subject to one of […]

Have a Sticky Christmas!

Me and my mate Lloyd where feeling creative other day so we did a bit of stop-frame animation using a fixed camera and a shed-load of sticky Post-It™ Notes! A few hours later, and you can see the result below. Happy Christmas everyone! Snapshots on Flickr

And so it begins…

Recent visitors may be wondering why I ditched the Flash version of my site in favour of this; a rather generic-looking web log. Well, the truth is, I only tend to update my portfolio (that can still be found here) when I feel I’ve produced an outstanding piece of work. So as you could imagine, it doesn’t get […]
